The British Empire and the Chinese Diaspora

The British Empire and the Chinese Diaspora

Online event

Panel discussion with Hannah Lowe, Wenlan Peng and Yvonne Foley, whose family backgrounds are intimately linked with the history of the British Empire. Poet and writer Hannah Lowe will be recounting her father’s experiences as a Chinese immigrant from Jamaica; Yvonne Foley will reveal the painful discovery of how her father, a Chinese seaman who had settled and married in Liverpool, was forcibly repatriated to China without the family’s knowledge; and documentary filmmaker and a director of The Meridian Society Wenlan Peng will describe life in Calcutta’s Chinatown and the mass migration westwards of the Chinese community due to the Sino-Indian border disputes of the 1960s. The discussion will be chaired by Dr Lucienne Loh, Reader in English Literature at Liverpool University and one of two curators who conceived the idea for the exhibition Chinese & British currently on at the British Library.
