Celebrate Lantern Festival with The Meridian Society!

Sunday 5th February 2023

We hope the Year of the Rabbit has started off well for everyone. As Lantern Festival marks the day of the first full moon in the new Lunar New Year and the last day of the Spring Festival, The Meridian Society invites members and friends to join us for brunch and a film show, details below. Chinese brunch with vegetarian options will be served at Noodle & Snack. Members will know the premises well from when it was under flautist Guo Yue’s management. As the name suggests, the new proprietor specialises in noodles, but also offers dumplings and rice, and promises to give us a hearty meal to celebrate the festival.

Brunch will be followed by a film show at BFI Southbank. What about China? Scholar, artist and filmmaker Trinh Minh-ha combines travelogue-style video – shot in the 1990s during her visit to rural areas of the country – with poetry, folk songs and oral histories as a way of meditating on China’s past, present and future. In this profound, immersive work, the filmmaker holds a mirror to the women and children she encounters in their communal spaces, reflecting on what has been lost and what we are in the process of forgetting.
